Strike indicators for fly fishing use have been around for some time now. Ive used them for years and they are very effective when used correctly.
If you are new to using them you may wonder how to use a fly fishing indicator when fly fishing.
I tend to use mine as one method in my arsenal for when im not able to catch say a trout using the straight forward casting and retrieving methods.
Ill usually try a strike indicator if im fishing a bloodworm type fly as a dropper or with an egg fly pattern.
Some see it as cheating but for me fishing is fishing and im there to catch fish!
At the end of the day the choice is yours but for me i like to use them when i feel its the way i am able to reach or catch the fish in the right place at the right time.
What are Strike indicators?
Strike indicators as ive touched on above are a tool many fishers use. They are usually made up of foam.
The indicator sits onto the leader line and then your fly is at the end of the leader line.
When in the water, the strike indicator will stay afloat on the surface of the water and act as a bouye to the fly and allows the fly to sit at a certain depth below the surface of the water.
One of the nice things when using an indicator is you can alter the depth of how the fly sits below water by simply moving the indicator further up or down the leader line.
This is a useful tip if the fish are feeding in deeper water or closer to the surface and can increase your catch rate accordingly.
Where does the strike indicator go on the fly line
You can place the strike indicator on the leader line before the fly and then simply slide it up or down the fly line to your preferred choice.
I usually start with mine around 8-10 inches away from the fly and have a few casts to see if the fish are feeding at that depth of water.
If nothing bite i simply alter the indicator another 5 inches up the leader line towards the fly line and repeat this process until i find the ultimate fishing depth the fish are feeding on that day.
