FAQ’s

What should i look for when buying a fly reel?

There are a few things you should consider when buying a fly reel. The build, the size, the amount of line it can hold, whether its for saltwater or freshwater fly fishing and then lastly the price.

What size fly reel do i need?

Ideally in my opinion,  you want to pair the same weight fly reel as that of the fly rod. For example, a 6 wt fly rod should be paired with a 6wt fly reel. This will help to keep the balance between rod and fly reel matched and make it easier to manage.

Does fly reel size matter?

As outlined above, in my opinion, size of the reel does matter. Another example would be if I was targeting larger fish and I want to be able to play them with a stronger drag system. The drag system on a smaller reel suited for brook trout wouldn’t help me fight a Tuna fish as the 2 fish clearly are different in size and one more aggressive with its runs that the other.

Can Fly Reels Get Wet?

Yes, its perfectly fine for a fly reel to get wet. Most fly reels are built to withstand being dropped in water and usually are built with a seal around the drag system.

With this built in seal, its unlikely you will come across any issues if the reel gets wet.

At the end of every fly fishing trip i always run water over my fly reels just to help maintain them and keep them nice and clean for my next trip!

What is a fly reel used for?

A fly reel has 3 main purposes.
1. To hold your backing line, fly line, and leader line.

2. To help you when you hook a fish and to stop it in its tracks when it decides to run.

3. To assist you to retreive the fly line back onto the reel and allow you to bring in the fish you hooked into.

The drag system on a fly reel also helps the spool from overrunning when the line is stripped.
